What is Cordyceps.
It was Tibetan shepherds who found Cordyceps for the first time more than a thousand years ago in the highlands of Tibet, considering it a "super herb". They had in fact noticed that when their animals fed on it, they became more agile, vital and active. They picked it up and eating it they realized it had the same effects on humans. It is a parasitic mushroom native to Tibet that grows up to 5000 meters of altitude. It is very rare and its therapeutic properties have fed myths and legends for millennia. According to Chinese medicine by acting on the kidney and lung meridian, it improves kidney function and protects the respiratory tract. The West became aware of it following the astounding sporting performances achieved by Chinese athletes during the Chinese National Games in 1993. Several world records in endurance running (1500 and 10.000 meters) were broken, giving rise to suspicions of doping, later denied by the coaches who declared that the performances were attributable to the use of Cordyceps during training and competitions.

Its nutrients.
Rich in polysaccharides, it boosts the immune system, giving the body greater resistance to infection and disease. Cordyceps contains many biologically active substances that are very important from a nutritional point of view such as:

  • All essential amino acids.
  • Vitamins E, K, B1, B2, B12.
  • Proteins
  • Polysaccharides (40%) (especially cordicepic acid, the most important active component from a therapeutic point of view).
  • Minerals and trace elements such as: potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium, iron, manganese, copper, zinc, phosphorus, selenium, silicon, nickel, vanadium, and many others.
  • Cordicepine.

Its properties.
It improves cardiac function; contributes to lowering total cholesterol and triglycerides, raising the values of good cholesterol (HDL); improves liver and kidney functions; slows down cellular aging and protects against damage caused by free radicals; improves sexual function of men and women, increasing libido and testosterone levels, thus intervening in cases of erectile dysfunction; improves blood flow by relaxing smooth muscles. helping to soothe the fatigue of the lower limbs; strengthens the immune system even in the presence of degenerative diseases.

The Cordyceps as all mushrooms, falls into the category of adaptogen and is a particularly effective adaptogen able to enhance both Yin and Yang of the body. It increases immune defenses on one side and the energy of the body on the other, calms the mind and strengthens the body, modulates mood and reduces the effects of aging.

Antitumor activity.
There are many studies from which it emerged that the mushroom, being active in fighting the dysfunctions of the immune system and being an excellent antiviral, contains important components for the fight against some pathologies such as renal, hepatic and pulmonary carcinoma. Both polysaccharides and beta-glucans contained in it once decomposed release numerous molecules of oxygen at the cellular level. The result is that the cancerous materials present are immediately destroyed. Cordicepine, one of the target compounds, is responsible for its antiviral effects.

Hypoglycemic effects.
Cordyceps has the ability to reduce appetite and more importantly is a regulator of glucose metabolism. It acts both by regulating blood glucose levels (regulation of enzymes that control hepatic glucose) and by increasing peripheral sensitivity to insulin. It also has the ability to significantly reduce appetite.

Cordyceps and sport.
It is clinically proven that the use of Cordyceps increases cellular energy by more than 50% as it improves the use of oxygen and increases ATP production. Its assumption therefore allows a marked improvement in aerobic performance, speeds up muscle recovery times and the reabsorption of lactic acid. The anabolic action at muscular level is attributable to an increase in testosterone during physical activity. A recent double-blind study, carried out at the University of Pavia on a group of non-competitive cyclists, has highlighted the effects on testosterone and cortisol levels following the intake of Cordyceps and Reishi (one of the most important medicinal mushrooms). The results were remarkable: it was found an increase in testosterone levels of 249% and a decrease in cortisol of 77%.
